Benefits of promoting your staff

If you have a vacancy, don’t overlook your existing body of staff for promotion. It is easy to get used to people being in the lane that they are in, or accidentally overlook their abilities but there are many benefits to promoting from within, here are a few:

  • Increased loyalty to your company as staff will feel valued and seen

  • Recruiting to entry level positions will cost your company less money and take less time to fill

  • Existing employees understand your business and its culture/values

  • Induction into the role will take less time

  • Nobody will understand the subsequently vacant role more than the person you just promoted, so they will be able to help you offer the best training to the new member of the team

Do consider that not everybody wishes to be promoted, so don’t expect everybody to jump at the opportunity. It’s also important to understand that some people will think that they are the right fit for the role but you don’t believe they fulfil all of the requirements. In these cases it is important to have a transparent conversation with them to outline the reasons why they aren’t right for the role at this time and what they need to do to become suitable for it in the future - they will have a lot more respect for you if you’re honest and your investment in their growth.
